After graduating from Acadia University in 1973 and 1976 with respective BSc and MSc degrees, he joined the Nova Scotia Department of Mines in 1975 pursuing structural and economic geological research until his retirement in 2008. His 33-year residency with the Mineral Resources Branch of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources as a Senior Research Gold Geologist and as Liaison Geologist for the Mineral Resources Branch became his home away from home.

In addition to working in the Yukon, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia, he has worked in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Nevada, and California.

Although much of his early career research was dedicated to gold mineralization in Nova Scotia, he has since carried out mineral exploration for oxide/sulphide base metals, iron deposits (with and without gold), tungsten mineralization, lithium deposits, REE, and other critical metals, in addition to aggregate resources.
